Foods to Fill the Pantry: Lavenham

Wherever you’re staying in Suffolk, there’s an abundance of local and independent produce just waiting to be discovered. We’ve compiled a list of our favourites to help you get the most of our county’s fantastic food, and help you on your way to stocking the quintessential Suffolk frigidaire.

Lavenham Farmers Market

Held on the 4th Sunday of every month at the Village Hall, The Lavenham Farmers Market features only the highest quality artisan producers in Suffolk, with over 30 stockists in regular attendance. Expect breads, cheeses, meats and sweet treats as well as locally brewed beer, with all produce sold directly from the producers themselves. The Market even won a prestigious Suffolk Food & Drink Award in 2012 for Best Suffolk Market - if your stay coincides with this delightful event, we wholeheartedly recommend a visit!

Held on the fourth Sunday, monthly from 10am until 1.30pm.

Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Semer

A short drive from picturesque Lavenham, the Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer stocks a variety of fresh foods, from vegetables to home-reared meats, free range eggs to freshly baked bread, and hearty pies to scrumptious cakes. Customers are able to purchase everything produced on the farm, with food miles nonexist on many products.

Not only a great place to shop for local produce, the farm also makes for a fantastic trip out - why not make a day of it and meet the animals on the trail?

Open Monday-Saturday 8.30am - 5.45pm, Sunday and Bank Holidays 9am - 5pm.

Willow Tree Farm Shop, Glemsford

The Willow Tree Farm Shop has been farming and serving the public since the 1950’s, selling the freshest of groceries at incredibly reasonable prices! As expected, a range of locally sourced edible goods are available, as well as plants, coal, seasoned logs, gas, dog food and wine. On Saturday mornings, Willow Tree’s own local fishmonger even visits to provide customers with only the finest local fish. Whether you need a cake for a spot of afternoon tea, a Rafi curry pack for dinner, or a fantastic selection of wines for a weekend away, Willow Tree Farm is sure to stock it!

Open Monday 2pm - 6pm, Tuesday - Saturday 9am - 6pm, Sunday 10am - 5pm.

Sparling & Faiers

Named the Most Loved Bakery in East Anglia in 2015, Sparling & Faiers operates from centuries-old premises in Lavenham’s Market Place, functioning as a bakery since the 17th century. Serving fantastic breads, pastries, doughnuts and sausage rolls hot from the oven, the family-run business is certainly easily to find - just look out for the Hovis sign outside the premises, now over 100 years old. Not to be missed for an authentic taste of Lavenham’s history.

Open Monday-Saturday from 9am - 5:30pm.

Chilli and Chives

After you’ve stopped off for a spot of lunch and coffee, make sure to treat yourself to some takeaway treats from Chilli and Chives. The deli sells both savoury and sweet items, award winning coffee, teas, locally pressed Suffolk apple juice, olives, cakes as well as frozen puddings and meals. An absolute delight.

Open daily from 9am - 5pm, 7 days a week.

The Copper Kettle at Kersey Mill

This gorgeous “cake-ery”, born from a love of locally produced food and drink, is a must if you’re staying in the Lavenham area. Both a bakery and a tearoom, lunch time treats are made to order, but the cafe also has an irresistible array of takeaway items for you to enjoy from the comfort of your Lavenham holiday home. The Copper Kettle Team can even cook you something to serve at home, taking orders for starters, main courses and desserts - drop off a family sized dish and forget the hassle of food preparation on holiday!

Like Lavenham, Kersey is a typically picturesque Suffolk village, and is well worth an explore in itself upon collecting your scrumptious goodies.

Open Monday - Saturday from 8.30am - 5pm, and Sundays 10am - 4pm.

Lavenham Brook Vineyard

Established in 2003, Lavenham Brook Farm now has 10,000 vines on a 10 acre south-facing site. The Vineyard’s 2009 & 2010 Bacchus and Pinot Noir Rosé were awarded Gold and Silver meals by both the UK Vineyards Association and the East Anglian Wine Growers Association - a testament to their fantastic tipples! A major contributor to the great depth of the wines flavour is Suffolk’s chalky boulder clay, as well as the abundance of East Anglian sunshine throughout the Summer months.

Lavenham Brook’s small farm shop is open on Friday and Saturday from 10am - 4pm, with events held throughout the year. Their fine wines can also be purchased at Lavenham’s monthly Farmers Market.
